The way i have done it is,get all the high points off with a scraper, unibond (PVA glue mix with water) the whole wall and plaster over with board finish. Not as messy and you have a nice smooth wall with no sign of the horrible ARTEX.

Knock off the high bits, then remove timberwork (skirtings, architraves) and Dry Line with sheets of TAPER EDGE plaster board. Wickes have a plasterboard adhesive (like coving adhesive), put a few dabs of adhesive on the wall, stick the plasterboard on, I used a fair size timber pad and club hammer to be sure. Because this is taper edge board you can 'Skrim Tape' (wickes) the joints, the taper allows the skrim to be below the surface, stops cracking later. Then, fill the remaining trough with Polyfilla (wickes, big bag) allow to dry, sand, decorate....Replace yout timberwork...job well done

Welcome to the nightmare. You have no choice but to chip it off, damaging the original plaster in the process.

Personally if I ever had to do this again I'd just nail plasterboard over the top of it. And start all over again. It is hellish stuff.

A couple of years ago we were househunting. In one house there was artex. It put me off buying the house.

you should be very careful about removing artex as it could possibly contain a form of asbestos. electric sanders are the best bet but it will be very dusty. I would get some advice before tackling this job.

You can buy a smelly solution that 'melts' the horrible stuff or as suggested by others= nail plasterboard or get a plasterer to skim coat over it - good luck.

I agree with both 2nd and 3rd answers defiantly a nightmare and yes older stuff can contain asbestos. Even if you chip it off still wear a mask. Good luck

Do what i done, get someone else to do it..
He used a steam stripper and his huge arms..
Apparently it's quite easy to plaster over, less hard work and mess.
