My understanding is they are to only observe and report. They may never engage. This sort of use of them is to appease those who believe islamics are sneaking nukes over the border etc.. It serves no actual real purpose and is quite the waste.

They were not retreating but reporting to border patrol who has the authority to arrest illegals coming over border. The National Guard are the new eyes & ears of the border patrol.

National security. The border patrol seems ill equipped to handle the job these days. So, they are there as reinforcement. However, if what you say about them retreating is true, there is always someone in the ladder of leadership to blame for that. Not the man/woman on the ground. They are just doing their job. If they are told to stand down then they will stand down. If they are told to stand their ground then they will stand their ground. Understand?

In our wonderful world of PC, we haven't armed them. We wouldn't want to offend the illegals breaking our laws now would we?
