A guajira is a poor person living in the rural interior of Cuba. An approximate translation is "peasant". "Guajira" also refers to a style of music that originated with these people.

"Guantanamera" is a person who comes from the region near Guantanamo Bay.

The song is a classic of Cuban music. It has been sung and recorded by many, many different artists. For some people of Cuban origin, this song is a patriotic symbol. Some of the words to the song come from a famous poem by José Martí. (but not the part that says "guajira guantanamera")
