It may depend on what kind of food it is eating, especially if it's a fishy kind of smell coming from his/her mouth. My dog had the same problem when he was a puppy. Always go with a hard food in the bag instead of the soft in a can. Brands can be a problem as well. The cheaper ones tend to give smelly breath or even worse-GAS. Pedigree is always pretty good to go with if you don't wanna spend as much if you bought science diet or IAMS. Size of the kibble itself might be a problem. Your dog might just be shoveling his/her food without chewing. Try a bigger sized food so your dog will have no choice but to chew it and will better off for their teeth. I know puppies tend to have razor sharp teeth so as long as you're overlooking while he or she is doing it, a nice bone or toy that cleans teeth is pretty good. But like I said watch them sharp puppy teeth cause the bone or toy may not last long. Try brushing your puppy's teeth as well. Good to start now so as he gets older he'll just be plain used to it. Also watch when you take your puppy out on walks or let out to use the bathroom-he/she may be eating it's feces or other dog's feces. After all this and still no results I think it's time to bring the dog to the vet to make sure it isn't a symptom of something more serious. Good luck!

For a natural remedy, you can use parsley. Some dogs like this and will nibble on it, or you can sprinkle it in their food. This keeps their breath fresh and is safe to feed them.
You can also buy greenies (green bone shaped treats) that are made as a dental chew, as well as contains useful things that combat bad breath.
Dentabones by Pedigree readily available in the supermarket are also useful for cleaning teeth. The constant chewing action will clean their teeth. Brushing their teeth with a little finger brush and edible dog toothpaste is another option (and necessary like us, on a daily basis).
Don't feed them soft or human food, as this will add to tartar adn plaque buildup. Finally, the plastic/ rubber dentabones are a great way to combat teething puppies itching mouths, as well as providing a means for them to clean their teeth. They also come in scented flavours such as chicken with spikey stubble for extra cleaning pleasure!! Do not let the plaque buildup, as my friend's dog had bad plaque, and there was so much resulting bacteria from it, the bacteria got inteh blood stream and went into the heart, and now the dog has a heart murmur and must eat heart medication for the rest of it's life. not only is it a pain, and expensive, but also worrying for the dog owners!!
So start early, keep those teeth clean!!

Why is his breath bad? Normally, puppies don't have bad breath, though mine did.
The source of my puppy's bad breath was the cat litter box and dirty diapers. She loved to eat the cat's and my nephew's turds. I guess they were like litte Baby Ruth's or something. That was before the doggie mint and diaper genie days.
It smelled really foul, so I would just give her a people mint or two (Certs or the drops worked well) until she grew out of it and I figured out how to keep her away from poop while I was gone during the day.

If he's under 6 months old, this is puppy breath. It can be nasty, but it's normal and should pass as he gets older. If he's a puppy, his teeth should be healthy and clean, just make sure he has plenty of safe chew toys like Kongs. There are some good doggy breath mints that I used on my puppy http://www.furfection.com/product.php?productid=160&cat=50&page=1
They are all natural and the ingredients are safe.
Also Dr. Foster and Smith has a pepermint mouthwash that will freshen his breath and clean his teeth and gums http://www.drsfostersmith.com/Product/Prod_Display.cfm?pcatid=507&N=2001+113375

The food has a lot to do with it. Make sure to only feed your dog dry food. It helps to clean the teeth and prevents tartar build up and decay. Also there are dental treats to give you to your dog. Schedule a dental cleaning every month - every 6 months. That will help tremendously.
Also cranberry powder does wonders to freshen a dog's breath and it's all natural. Just sprinkle it on the food.
Don't feed your dog canned food, or food in a pouch. It gets caught in the teeth and causes decay and rot.

Dogs get bad breath because they don't live like they are supposed to, they are supposed to it animals, which the bones and other stuff (not sure what) keep their teeth good, therefore their breath good. Our dogs are working dogs so quite often eat a full rabbit each a day! Their teeth are shiney white and their breath doesn't smell

Well, puppies usually have bad breath. That is normal.Make sure to brush its teeth and have regular doggie dental checkups. In addition, you can give it treats made for dental protection.Make sure you are feeding it a good diet appropriate for its age and breed(large vs. small)Do not give it mints that are meant for people. There are dog mints.Burt's Bees makes a great liquid breath freshener for dogs(you can also use it for people because it is so natural).

"Make sure to only feed your dog dry food. It helps to clean the teeth and prevents tartar build up and decay"
That is bunk. That is what commercial dog food companies want you to believe so that they can sell their crap. Kibble gets wet in the mouth and sticks to the teeth causing decay.
The best way to combat bad breath in your puppy is to feed him a species appropriate diet. What would he be eating if he was living like his Grey Wolf ancestors? Hummm... Caribou, deer, rabbit, squirrel, mice... lots of muscle tissue, some squishy stuff, some bones, and a wee bit of fur.
Where ya gonna find that in kibble? Dogs don't eat corn, wheat, rice, or flax in the wild, so why the hell are we feeding them that crap in captivity?
My dogs are all raw-fed. Their teeth are clean, and their breath is actually sweet. SWEET! The connective tissue in the hunks of meaty bones that they get along with the action of ripping and tearing their supper acts as dental floss. My 12 year old GSD, has all of his teeth still, and my vet says that he's got the cleanest teeth that he has ever EVER! seen on a dog his age. That's proof enough for me.
The dentabones, by the way, have caused obstructions in numerous dogs, resulting in expensive surgeries and/or death.

bad breath in dogs is a sign of bad teeth or a mouth infection, take it to the vets. They can give you toothpaste or dental chew or an antibiotic if necessary

Generally, dogs have poor breath. Look at its teeth, see fi they are "yucky"
You can brush their teeth daily, and that would help. Go to the pet store and get special toothpaste and brush.
It could also be the food, and I would talk to the vet about switching.
