To make sure you are not caring and STD's that you could pass on to your partner. Remember this started along time a go when the girl was to be (pure) and they could make sure that all parties were safe.

Original it was to check for, I forget the term, but to see if there was a certain type of chromosome, that would affect the couple having health children, it was then later to check for std's. I really didn't know that there were still any states that enforced this.

In Illinois we didn't need to take one. However, it would be handy to know if your spouse had some weird disease before marrying him. Also, there is a RH disease that can cause big problems if you want a child. If you go through any prenatal screening they test for this but it would be nice to know before getting married if you both want kids.

This law began many years ago due to syphilis. It detects whether either person has Gonorrhea or Syphilis. I don't know if it tests for other STDs..
