I really just don't like how glossy it is and the color. I would like to make it a darker shade and not so shiny.

If it's real wood veneer, you have to be extremely careful. Usually, wood veneer is no more than 1/8" thick. Changing the color, unless you want to go darker is almost impossible. If there is a varnish finish, sand carefully & lightly with 220 grit sandpaper, refinish. Good luck.

Refinishing veneer is nearly impossible but it really depends on what you want to do. If it is just scratched and dull looking try some "howards" feed and wax or some of the howards products that hide scratches.

If the veneer is totally wrecked - peeling off or missing parts, you might just peel it all off and paint the piece. It really depends on what you are trying to refinish and what condition it is in.
