A two week old should be nursing approx every 2 hours around the clock. Since this is a common growth spurt time, eating more frequently is even normal.

When you say he's not eating well, exactly what do you mean? Not eating much? Not eating at all? Having trouble latching?

What does not sleeping well mean? As I said before, you'd expect a breastfed baby this age to be eating every 2 hours around the clock. So it's normal for him to not be sleeping more than 1.5 to 2 hours at a time.

Why are you supplementing?

Any pattern to when he is fussy? Before/after eating? Morning vs. night? Are you watching to catch early hunger cues? (Crying is a late indicator of hunger.) Does he seem gassy?

Is he wetting and pooping? How often?

momma2min has very good questions, all of the answers to which you should have ready when the doc calls back.

I would like to add that if your baby seems very fussy after eating or has trouble staying asleep and wakes up with gas a lot, you should ask your doctor about GERD (acid reflux). My baby had it from birth to about 9 months old but wasn't diagnosed for a LONG time because his doc didn't understand what I meant when I said "he's waking up all the time at night."

Have very specific information ready for the doc!

(Once my son was treated for GERD and also getting infant gas drops every 3 hours, he slept much better - until he started teething!).

Hey girl, I have a 2 week old too! Congrats:) My son wasn't eating well at first AT ALL. (we were breastfeeding exclusively). The doc told me that in order for him to eat more, we HAD to supplement with formula. I went and bought formula AND a breast pump. I used the pump, and gave him my milk in a bottle. He was a whole different baby!! He eats every 2-3 hours now, and the pumping made a world of difference, I would strongly recommend it...especially if you don't want him eating formula (like me). Good Luck!!!! Feel free to write me, tibbetts79@yahoo.com.

Maybe something that yuo are eating is not agreeing with his tummy?? Try eating a totally bland diet. That way any garlic or spices you are eatingisn't coming out in your milk.
