Baby gate you can get cheap ones at walmart. You can step over it and the cat can jump it with ease but the dog you can train not to and you know when he's jumped it (you can hear) and get him before he gets into it.

A baby gate which was suggested is a good idea. Kitty can jump it, you can step over it, if doggie can't access it, he can't have kitty litter snacks.
When you take you dog outside, clean up his waste right away. If you block the cat box and practice good yard hygiene, this will detour him until he out grows this behavior. Don't forget this is not unusual behavior, his mother did this when he was a pup to stimulate and keep the area clean for her puppies, in the wild they do this to cover the scent of their young.
You can also try teaching him commands like, "leave it" or "no". Another thing to do is bring a toy he likes to chase or play with outside. Once he has done his business, and not touched it, reward him by tossing around his toy.
Coprophagy as it is called, is disgusting but not unusual. Make sure he is on a natural preservative free dog food. Sometimes they are sniffing out the undigested protein in feces and consume it. You could also try adding Prozyme this is a digestive enzyme that helps the body absorb more nutrients, which may him steer away from doing this. Norwegian Kelp is another additive that provides often lacking nutrients. Talk to your vet.
He will eventually out grow this, most dogs do. You just have to instill some restrictions and be diligent for a while. You might want to try some doggie breathe fresheners in the mean time. Good Luck!

Here's the thing... dogs are gross- to humans. To dogs, the scratch box is a buffet. Count yourself lucky, I have a pet pig and it's the same thing with her poo - only it is like dining in a 5 star for my lab.
Get a covered litter box. They're about 15 bucks at Wal Mart and have a filter. Then make sure you have a video camera to film the dog getting stuck and busted to win 10 grand on AFV. He'll only do it once.
My cats didn't like the lid at 1st but they're used to it now and it's much neater, less smelly and way more attractive.
Yes, I have 2 dogs, 6 cats, a pig and a couple of Zebra finches... I know my critters.
Dog bones help with the doggie breath following a trip thru the buffet.

Consider installing a cat door that your dog won't fit through in the door to the room containing the litter box. This is what I did. Also the Booda dome litter box with the ramp seems to keep a lot of curious big dogs out cause their head doesn't fit up the ramp easily :)
I have also seen instructions online on how to prop a door open just wide enough for a cat to fit through by installing an eye bolt and a hook creatively, but I don't remember how they did it or where I saw the instructions.
Also, this is a really neat cat door and more attractive for indoor use http://www.cathole.com/

The following techniques may be effective in resolving the problem:
Treat your pet's food with something that causes his stool to taste bad. A commercial product called 4-BID⢠is available through your veterinarian. The same result may be achieved by using the food additive MSG. Both of these products work in many cases, but not always. Before using either of these products, consult with your veterinarian.
Give your pet's stools a bad taste by sprinkling them directly with cayenne pepper or a commercial product such as Bitter Apple®. For this method to be effective, every stool your pet has access to must be treated so that he learns that eating stools results in something unpleasant. Otherwise, he may discriminate (using scent) which stools have been treated and which have not.
Install a baby-gate in front of the litter box area. Your cat shouldn't have any trouble jumping over it, but your dog likely won't even make the attempt.
Place the litter box in a closet or room where the door can be wedged slightly open from both sides so that your cat has access but your dog doesn't.
Think twice before setting up a some kind of homemade "booby trap" to stop your dog from eating cat feces from a litter box: Remember that if it frightens your dog, it's likely to frighten your cat, too.
Good luck! :)

You can get something (I can't remember what it was called but your vet or the sales staff at your PetsMart will know) from the vet or PetsMart that you feed the cat that makes her poo taste bad. I had the same problem and after a couple of days, the dog quite eating it. We didn't have to give it to the cat very long, just long enough for the dog to lose the favor for the poo.

First try and find a place your cat can get to but the pup can't. You are just going to have to teach him that he is a bad dog when he does that, it is normal, he is not a freak or anything. There is alot of training involved with a pup and unfortunately that is one of the deeds. Stick with it and Good Luck
