I have a completely different view on this one. There are some questions that beg to be asked. After they asked you to do it, did you say that you would? Could you have finished the task? If so...they have every right to be ratty with you. They were depending on you to help them.

Tell them, next time get some other mug to do it for you. Or if that's a bit too upfront, just don't help them out again

They probably feel guilty for some reason-possibly because they can't do anything in return.
Just bring it up candidly and diplomatically and
if they don't open up- walk away.
