I don't really want to just pin/staple/tape it up. I want it to look nicer than that. I just want a simple thin black frame, but I know this will cost a fortune to custome frame at Hobby Lobby or Michaels, even if I go during a half-price sale. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Here is a cheap solution. Purchase inexpensive artists canvass stretchers at the craft store. They come in a variety of sizes and are made of raw wood. You can paint, stain, plaster or do just about anything to the wood to match the theme of the poster, his room or colors. You can also purchase inexpensive posterboard as a backing or to surround the poster if you cannot get the stretchers in the exact size of the poster. If you want the "look" of glass over it, have the home improvement store cut a piece of plexiglass to fit. You can duct tape the posterboard to the back and cover that with plain brown paper, fabric, wallpaper, or even gift wrap for a finished look. Then attach a picture hanger wire, or a claw toothed hanger on the back to attach it to the wall.

Get some molding trim. Paint it black. Miter the corners. Sticky tack poster to wall. Put trim on with small nails. Don't make too big a deal out of it, next year there might be something else you will want on that wall. If you want you can get a costly piece of plexiglass cut to size that will work with chair molding.

Home Depot and Lowes have a large variety of trim, some wood some plastic, just how decodent do you want to get? If you go with plastic, Lowes sells a plastic paint that's really good. Me, I would go with the wood, paint it. They also sell a cheap miter box to cut the corners, or have your measurements ready and cut it yourself right in the store or have a customer associate cut it. The trim is sold by the foot, I would cut it to specifications right in the store. Acrylic or glass front, they both sell it, cut to size. Backing, heavy card board or plywood?

I bought a black "poster frame" at Wal-Mart just a month ago for a surfing poster for my own son's room. The frame was $17.00+/-.

How about putting two pieces of plexi glass and put it between them and use some ribbon or rope to make the frame.
