Sometimes there is no alternative and a crown must be placed over your tooth. Sometimes a very large filling is not enough, the tooth could break. After a root canal the tooth gets weak and it could fracture. The last option is to take the tooth out and you really don't want that, it will cost even more to replace the missing tooth with a bridge or an implant. So you see sometimes we have no other choice, really.

you usually need to have a crown if your tooth is too badly broken to place a filling.
