I got an email saying the way to test whether there was lead in lipstick was to rub a gold ring over a smear of lipstick on the back of your hand. If it turned black, this was caused by the lead in the lipstick. To my horror almost all of my lipsticks turned black when I did this. Lead can cause cancer so it is frightening. I have checked the ingredients on the boxes and there is no mention of lead. Is there something else in the lipstick that turns it black when you rub gold on it?

In December 2005, the American Cancer Society posted this notice on its Web site:

Rumor:
In May 2003, an email began making the rounds claiming that many of the most popular lipsticks on the market contain lead and will cause cancer. The email then offers a way to test lipsticks to see if they have lead.

Fact:
A search of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration Web site finds that lead content of coloring agents used in lipstick is regulated by that agency, and that the levels permitted are not a health problem.

lipstick is perfectly safe. Women have been wearing lipstick for years. Plus, I think it's against the law to put lead in anything now days.

This is an urban myth thats been spread over the internet, if there actually was lead in lipsick then the manufacturers would all have been shut down!

Have a search on http://snopes.com for more information, but don't worry, it's not true!

There is no lead in modern lipstick (maybe in Elizabethan stuff). The manufacturers would get hung drawn and quartered, if they put it in.
