Basically these numbers pertain to the quality of the picture you can have. 720p for example. p stands for pixels and 720 is the amount of individual pixels per square inch. Or 720i. I stands for interlaced. 720i would be 720 interlaced pixels per square inch. p is a higher quality than i. the highest quality availible currently is 1080p. The Xbox 360, with the proper cables, can achieve 1080i.

720 in plasma tv's refer to the scan lines the tv can display. The p in 720p stands for progressive scan. HDTV also has 1080 which means 1080 scan lines. I don't know what 1001 or 1500 means.

They relate to the screen resolution. Specifically the horizontal scan lines. HD ready televisions must have a minimum screen resolution of 720, although most seem to be slightly more. Full HD resolution is 1080.

The p and i suffix refers to the type of display technology. Progressive or interlaced scan. Progressive is far superior.

For instance, 1080p would be a TV with full high definition resolution and progressive scan, while a 720i would be a high definition ready TV with interlaced scan.

If you have a full HD TV, you need to check that it can display at 1080p for all functions. A lot of full HD TVs display 1080p for TV, and 1080i for Xbox. I believe you can download a firmware upgrade for this, but it depends on the TV.
