You have a Retriever; so he/she would have to expend allot of energy. For my ESS and my Chow/Lab we walk on average 2 hours a day. Sometimes even that is not enough! Look at it this way; any Working/ Sporting breed should be exercised on a regular basis. Letting them out in the yard to run around is not exercising your dog. The best part about walking (exercising) your dog is you will bond w/ your dog. Especially if they know your the pack leader. I can't tell you how proud I am of my "boys" when they stay in line while we are passing a owner/dog that are all tangled up because the dog is in charge. Now get out there and walk your dogs people!!! :)
I think all dogs big or small should have the discipline of walking on a leash. i understand allot of people don't think their Tea Cups or Min Pin or any other small breed do not need the exercise, but it's not only exercise it's discipline too. If you have a small dog try walking them on a leash and I guarantee you will notice a change in their behavior.

On the weekends are dogs get at least 2 walks a day, and through the week we take one walk which is about an hour long. I love to walk the dogs it is good exercise for the whole family(me, my husband, and our 4 kids). We have been told we are crazy to take out 3 dogs, a stroller with our baby son, and the other 3 kids on foot out for a walk everyday, but it is great. We get to talk and interact with our kids, it is good exercise, and then after we come home and eat dinner our kids are ready for bed. It works out perfectly for everyone. We also like to take our dogs to the dog park at least every other weekend. The Chihuahuas look so funny running around with the bigger dogs there, and the Bulldog loves the attention and the small drainage ditch. She loves water but can't swim so the ditch is perfect, because it only comes to the top of her legs and she can safely run through it.

Well with my Dog, a Shepherd, Husky mix. She gains weight pretty fast. So I walk her at least 3 times a day for one hour. She being a larger breed that gains weight fast needs that exercise, sometimes I walk her more then 3 times for an hour, if it's a really nice day I will give her 1 or 2, 30 minute walks as well.
If it's really cold outside, the walk will only be 30 minutes, and if it's really hot, it will be less then 30 minutes. Instead I play lots with her in the house.
Plus I also play ball and run around in the back yard with her for more fun then just a walk.

It all depends on the size, breed, age & energy level of your dog. Also, if you have a garden where he can run & play, he may need to be walked less. In general, I would say two or three times a day is good for a walk. They should be let out to do their business a least 5 times a day.

I usually take my schnauzer for a short walk 3 or 4 times a day and at least one or two long walks. My other dog doesn't like to walk as much, so he doesn't go along as often.

At least twice. Once in the morning and once in the afternoon. Night time has been too cold around here. Our walks are always a minimum of one hour, usually closer to 1 1/2 to 2. We have a routine of what route we take as well.

It really depend on the breed of the dog because it depends on the size too.My dog is smaller so that usually means they need more attention and care so walk them a little more than if you have a bigger dog. Usually for all dogs walk them morning, afternoon, and night is a pretty basic routine.

It depends on the dog .I had a German Shepard I walked him 3 times a day for 50 to 60 min each walk & lots of play time. My min pins get walked once a day and lots & lots of play time. We work on playing catch & tug o war. & they both can do that for hours. By the time 8 pm roles they are under the blanket by my feet and sleeping will I watch t.v.

Only when they want to go. I have French Bulldogs, so if I make them exercise they think that I am trying to kill them. :)
I usually let my larger dogs out in the yard to run and play with each other at least twice a day, and they do go on walks occasionally. They usually get more exercise running around, than they do walking.

My Chihuahua doesn't need to be walked. She gets plenty of exercise in our home, running all over the house and up and down the stairs. However, I do take her to the dog park to run and play with other dogs.
