Color psychology is a field of study devoted to analyzing the effect of color on human behavior and feeling, distinct from phototherapy (the use of ultraviolet light to cure infantile jaundice). It is important not to confuse color psychology with color symbolism. For example, symbolically, red may be used to denote danger, largely due to the fact that reds have the illusion of appearing nearer than other colors and, therefore have greater impact. In color psychology, on the other hand the colors of danger are yellow and black. In color symbolism, green denotes envy in many cultures, while in color psychology, it is associated with balance

Yellow is safety such school buses, rain jackets, caution signs, and yeild signs. Also it is always neccessary to have a yellow painted curb by fire extinguishers.
Orange is all about caution. Hunters use bright orange for hunting...Construction workers use it so motorist san see then from a safe distance and even some prisons use orange to identify prisoners.
Brown is primarily used as a color to describe something dull or unclean. Mud, Dirty, Human waiste, Dry vegitation. Dont see too many brown trucks huh :-)

Yellow to me is happiness and warmth - flames, sunflowers, sunshine, that kinda stuff!
Orange - Prisons. Cuz prison suits are orange... uhh... again, it's a very warm color
Brown - nature, wood, being one with the earth.
Everyone is going to associate it with something different, I think. A lot of it comes from phrases 'green-eyed monster' and 'green with envy' or 'feeling blue' or in the case of white, the Christian church, black is evil because of an absence of light, the light being representitive of Jesus and God etc.

Don't know, but when I think of yellow I think Important (like when you highlight something, the highlighter is usually yellow). When I think of brown (except in the cases of race or skin color) I think guilt or dirty - like the infamous dirty magazines wrapped in brown paper, or the wine-o drinking from a brown paper sack. As for orange... I don't know, caution? Like the road construction signs??? I know those aren't emotions, but that's what I think of.
But I don't know when, or how colors came to represent emotion.

Colors and their associations change over time. In the Renaissance, for example, pink was reserved for boys; it was considered too passionate a color for girls to wear.
Orange used to be the color of jealousy ("Civil as an orange, and something of that jealous complexion," Much Ado About Nothing, William Shakespeare).
Yellow was associated with the choleric temperament (also associated with the choleric temperament: yellow bile, fire, passion, and anger) in the theory of the four humors.
