When i get sad i cook up something my grandma or mom used to make me when i was sick or feeling down and it helps me get out of a rut. I was cooking the other day and my friend told me that resorting to food when i am depressed is bad. I have altered all my recipes so they are healthier and i don't stuff my face i mean i still excercise like usual and everything. everytime i get down in the dumps i don't go to food i have other ways it's just sometimes i like to get out the pots and pans and make homemade chicken pot-pie. it's just comfort food is like a pick-me-up. Is it Bad to resort to comfort food?

I do, and I don't think it's bad. I know it makes me feel so much better when I'm biting into a cupcake, or a bowl of ice cream with Hershey's syrup, or eating potato chips and dip. Seeing that it's not something we do everyday of our lives, I don't see how it hurts. Of course, therapy and medication should accompany this. ;)

Some people use drugs, some people smoke, some people drink alcohol, and some people eat. A lot of times we use something as a crutch. Food can be one of those things. You should eat when you are hungry and not because you are upset or bored. That is the extreme answer.
If your life is healthy and you are not overeating and you are exercising then I see no problem with the action of eating food as a release. However, you may have an underlying condition that is causing it. Something to be aware of.

Yes it's bad. Why don't you try doing something that cheers you up that does not include eating. When I get upset, sad or depressed, instead of eating I got to the movies or do an activity that I really like. Try exercise. Exercise is healthy, helps you release stress and makes you feel better overall.

It's not bad. Your friend sounds like she is the one with the issues.
When I am sad or depressed, I don't eat at all. That's bad.
Making your Mom and Grandma's recipes put you in a happy state of mind. That is what you need.

Generally, yes. I mean if you're one of those people who automatically reaches for celery, you could probably do it all day regardless of mood. The problem is less what you're eating though, moreso the habit that you're developing. And habits are hard to break, so it is a better choice to do something other than eat when you're sad. Lots of people (magazines) suggest exercising or going for a walk.

It has the potential to become very unhealthy for you. I suggest you find another way to sooth yourself when you are sad/depressed as you put it. In the long run, it will keep you from becoming overweight, or putting it bluntly, fat.
