Panther Arms is now called DPMS and a Colt starts out around $1500-1600. Armalite is okay but not my favorite. I personally sell all of them but if I were going to buy one today for my personal collection for around $1000 I would get a Rock River Arms Flat top with the M4 configuration. It can be bought for under $1000 including tax and Rock River Arms has the current government contract. They are going to hold their value much like the Colt has and Bushmaster did during the 90s.

Don't be duped by gunstore price tags. I know many people with AR's and none of them paid over $1000 complete, brand new for them, not even MY Colt 6920 (Yes, I know Colt's ARE overrated). Most brands (even RRA) can be picked up for $700-900 range NEW.
Go to AR15.com and look around and get some ideas. You can build a "new to you" rifle for beans if you find the right deals

Rock River Arms. They are good quality and currently have a contract with the DEA. A basic AR from them will run about $1000.

With ARs it's hard to get a "bad" one. All of them are capable of having problems because they shoot small-bore centerfire and have tight chambers. Armalite, Bushmaster, DPMS, Hess, Colt, et. al. all make 'em good.

armalite is the one who first made the ar so i think the one making it the longest would have the best and most brands have them in that range

I am a fan of CMMG www.cmmg.com
lots of folks make Ar15s, and for every maker that someone loves you'll find someone else who hates it.
You could also buy parts and build your own for well under $1000.
