its funny that you asked, because they don't anymore. I just remodeled a shopping cart as a sculpture project that I can comfortably live out of. it is a bit like a transformer.

Because they take the ones that people abandon after they've taken their groceries home in them, and these people prefer to use the best carts.

They steal them from the parking lots of grocery stores. This is why some stores are so expensive on their food...they have to cover the cost of shoplifters and replace stolen carts.
