The cover that goes over the outside of the heat pump is an inch or more thick of white ice. All the way to the bottom on 2 1/2 sides. On the inside where the fan is; everything is fine. The fan has been running for several days. Non stop.
Does the ice on the outside bother the operation of the unit?

if ice clogs the airflow on the fins of the coil, it won't be able to collect heat in the heating cycle.

if you are cooling, ice around some of the pipes might take place, but they are generally insulated.

most importantly, is the unit heating or cooling like you want?

Yes. The ice covers the heat transfer surface and acts as an insulation on the surface.

Yes, ice is not good. You unit is probably low on freon. Have it checked. The ice will prevent a good heat exchange with the air.

The heat pump will go into a self defrost mode when needed.

It sounds like your defroster is not working. Better have an HVAC guy look at it.
