Try putting on warm, moist compresses - should help her until she can get to the vet.

You need to get her to the vet. Mastitis can be very dangerous to dogs. It's not uncommon at all for nursing Moms to get mastitis especially once the puppies have teeth. The mother of the litter my 2 Lab pups came from developed mastitis and ended up the vet hospital for 2 days from being so sick.

Canine mastitis is a breast infection in brood bitches, usually occuring a few weeks after whelping. It is not that common, but you should be aware of it. The breasts of a lactating brood ***** are normally warm and enlarged, but never red, dark, hot or painful when touched. Advanced canine mastitis presents as a hard, hot and almost black breast segment, which is extremely painful for the brood ***** when touched. Canine mastitis can be caused by weaning puppies too early, severe scratches from puppies claws or some other infection.A ***** with canine mastitis may be running a fever, be listless and possibly be off her food. She may not allow her puppies to nurse, and if she does, she will be “snappy” when they touch the affected area.
so i would get her to the vets to be checked out to get antibiotics and needs hot packs put on the breast., hope this helps

make sure you keep her cool, mastitis could easily cause a fever. regular temp for a dog is ABOUT 101-103, in case you have a doggy thermometer lying around. She most definitely could have mastits, dogs do get it. make sure she is drinking and eating. also try to watch and only let the pups eat from the teats that aren't appearing infected, or try to not let them nurse at all until you get her checked out. if you keep her belly moist the water will evaporate, cooling the teats and soothing her a bit. you could also use a damp towel. do not mess with the teats too much, as they are probably extremely tender.

She probably does have mastitis. I would try to gently milk her teats down a little if they are not too painful. Also, try applying warm compresses to the affected teats. Also, do not let the puppies nurse from her anymore, it can actually make them sick.

Yes, Yes and Yes you are right mastitis. They make a medicated salve for cows, you should be able to purchase it from a farm store and that will be a great help until she gets to the vet. Good Luck.

Your vet or his technician should've discussed this with you. They should call you at the end of the medication to make sure the problem is resolved. If your dog isn't spayed, I hope you will have that done when the vet says it'd be okay. Mammary tumors are more prevalent in unspayed dogs. I would call them tomorros first thing to ask your questions. Ask whether compresses would be appropriate. If your dog is getting worse, rather than better, then she needs to go back in. vet tech

Yes they can get mastitis - our lurcher just had it. I don't think she was as bad, but the vet basically, squeezed out all the gunk from the milk ducts, using the same sort of action as you would to milk her.
