Is poverty a modern problem or has it existed throughout recorded history? Seems to me that poverty has always been around and is really the result of greed in others namely governments.

Over population creates massive poverty. The poverty problem is much too big to be cured now. We are going to have to follow China's lead here. We really have to reduce populations right away in countries with too many people. It is no good to suggest opening our doors to maximum immigration because emigration from any of these countries is meaningless considering the scope of the problem.

Bring back the mantra of the 60's and 70's: Zero population growth. Poverty is a condition of overpopulation.
In the past fifty years the worlds population has zoomed to over 6.5 billion. In the previous thousands of years, the population only grew to 2 billion by the 1950's. Too many people too fast is ruining the earth's atmosphere. Cows aren't to blame, people are. People build cities and factories, people allow pollution to become "out of hand", people tear down Nature's filters and replace them with buildings and asphalt. People are going to end up killing our home...Mother Earth.
Zero population growth means:
One child per person or two children per couple. In that way the population would cease to grow.
When too many rats are placed in a small area, they start killing each other. Sound familiar?!

The problem is not really overpopulation. It is more of the imbalance of wealth distribution. Very few are industrious and rich. Very few are naturally rich. Very few would think of sharing their abundance. Very many are ignorant and lazy. Big land mass owned by a few.
Greed is what makes the poor much poorer. Taken advantage by rich, the wise, the opportunists, the strong, the poor and the ignorant have less means and opportunity to survive.

I agree with you 100%. I probably won't have kids.
My parents had 5, I love them, but I think that's very irresponsible.
It makes me sick when I hear ppl say "...I know we were put on this earth to reproduce"
