Sorry to hear you received this diagnosis. But I concur with Jeffrey P and loz030419. A biopsy will most likely follow to confirm this preliminary diagnosis, but if you've had a doctor tell you they saw breast cancer, then they probably are fairly certain.

There is no 101% way to be able to tell if any lump is malignant without biopsy but they will never progress with treatment without doing this anyway. They will be perfoming a biopsy to diagnose the histology of the growth. However a well trained radiologist can make a firm diagnosis due to the calcifiation shown on your scan, this is why mammograms are performed. Biopsies simply tell you the histology (cell type) of the growth and its differentiation but you CAN make diagnosis from a scan.

There are certain characteristics to cancer by the mammogram but it cannot always be definite.. But i would get a second opinion and also ask the results of the ultrasound.

"They" don't know, but mammograms can be very suspicious. Mammograms are rated 0 though 5 (BIRADS)according to statistical risk of associated cancer. BIRADS 4 mammograms have about a 1 in 5 chance of being cancer and BIRADS 5 about 4 in 5 end up being cancer.

This is a purely presumptive diagnosis until the biopsy.

Insist for further testing from your doctor. Do this immediately!! Were you shown and explained the X-rays?
