It is how children are born into the world and would remain if religion were not induced into their lives. There is no major belief. It is just not accepting others religions and thereby accepting gods. If you said the major tenets included not believing in god you would have to say that some of the major beliefs of religion X included not believing in Invisible Pink Unicorns or their disbelief in purple orangutans. I just don't see how something can be based on a negative. Maybe it makes sense in this case though, I digress
Major proponents are surfacing, and this is why:

the closest that i can come to something with a history would be secular humanism. Below is a history of the Humanist Manifesto
The second manifesto was written in 1973 by Paul Kurtz and Edwin H. Wilson, and was intended to update the previous one. It begins with a statement that the excesses of Nazism and world war had made the first seem "far too optimistic", and indicated a more hardheaded and realistic approach in its seventeen-point statement, which was much longer and more elaborate than the previous version. Nevertheless, much of the unbridled optimism of the first remained, with hopes stated that war would become obsolete and poverty would be eliminated.
Many of the proposals in the document, such as opposition to racism and weapons of mass destruction and support of strong human rights, are fairly uncontroversial, and its prescriptions that divorce and birth control should be legal and that technology can improve life are widely accepted today in the Western world. Furthermore, its proposal of an international court has since been implemented. However, in addition to its rejection of religion, various controversial stances are strongly supported, notably the right to abortion.
Initially published with a small number of signatures, the document was circulated and gained thousands more, and indeed the AHA website encourages visitors to add their own name. A provision at the end that the signators do "not necessarily endors[e] every detail" of the document, but only its broad vision, no doubt helped many overcome reservations about attaching their name.

Atheism isn't a belief system - i.e. no tenets or beliefs.
Atheism means "Without theism". It's defined as the lack of belief in the existence of god or gods OR (obviously) the positive belief their is no god or gods.
Nothing more.
I'm sure there are many people in history that were atheists, but it's not a belief system, but the absence of a specific type of belief system.

The tenets are "no god". The history is as long as the history of religion. There have always been non-believers, even when they were oppressed and didn't admit it. There have even been entire primitive tribes that had no god.
The guy everyone seems to be talking about now is Dawkins. I personally was struck by Carl Sagan back in the seventies and eighties. His major thing was popularizing science, but he threw atheism in as a side note.

Try looking it up on WIKIPDIA, I'm an atheist and there are two major groups from what I can tell, Atheists and New Atheists, New Athesists are sorta like the evangelical version of atheism. They dispise people who do beleive in god. As for beleifs its just basicly you don't beleive in god, its not a cult or anything. In the information age many people are comming to believe in no god. Mainly because science has been able to figure out things that were only seen as mericals

Atheism is a lack of belief in gods. That's it. No history. No tenets. We don't have a headquarters. We don't attend weekly meetings or have a single book that sums up everything we think. Every atheist is different in what they do believe and we are not organized as a group.

Atheism is not a religion. There are no atheist tenets or books or rules... atheists simply don't have belief in a god or gods.
Theist means one who believes in a god or gods and an atheist is one who does not share the theists belief in a god or gods...simple isn't it.
I have to correct beletje_v... atheism is not a lack of anything.

you dont need to know anything about atheism as long as you dont think there is a god
imagine a person that has never been told of the existance of a god
he is an atheist....
but to be a believer you have to know some things about your god...
the only belief atheists have is that there is no God.thats the core..
they try to explain the nonexcistance of god through logic and reason.
you will never hear an atheist say "Hawkings said it so it is correct"

There are no major tenets, or beliefs, as athiesm is the LACK OF a belief in a God or Goddess or any spiritual higher power. Basically, what is, is.

Atheism is one thing and one thing only: the lack of belief in a deity.
That's it. There are no holy texts. There are no founding fathers. There are no philosophies or dogmas or doctrines or geographical boundries or even really much of a history.
An essay on atheism would be one sentence long:
"Atheists believe that there is no deity or simply do not believe in one; all else is up for discussion."
