While there is no PARTICULAR place that it came from, for sure, many speculate that it came from the first 3 letters for the Greek name for Jesus which transliterates "IHS" "IHC" "JHS" "JHC" or from the Latin translation: Iesus Hominum Salvator ("Jesus Savior of Men").

Today, nuns will often wear a ring on their "wedding hand" that is engraved with the letters "IHS" for "In His Service", and THIS could be where it came from as well.

I have also heard that it means "Holy".

Either way, it's generally considered by polite society (which was influenced by the Christian movement) to be blasphemous.

Jesus is His name...Christ is His title. Back in those days, they did not use last names or as referred to these days family names. It is Jesus of Nazareth. Had there been another character named jesus in that town, then Jesus would be known as Jesus Bar Joseph. They used the "bar" as the means to communicate the father's name (in this case foster father) and the other would be called jesus bar _____ (whatever the father's name was). In reality, I have no idea where the H came from or when it was first used.

You are kidding, right?

In case you are serious, or in case someone else who is reading this really doesn't know, then I feel compelled to give an answer.

I think that you must realize that anyone who says "Jesus H Christ" is actually cursing, don't you? So the "H" stands for "hell", since people who say this are try to blaspheme as strongly as they possibly can.

It is an extra strong curse.

It basically comes down to a mistranslation of the first three letters of the name. IHC (there was no 'J' at the time) It was common to abbreviate things and people took it as initials later.
