We're at our destination, having a zipper issue. We're not so worried about it staying closed, but if they open it to inspect it, being able to get it back closed. Its do-able, but tricky. This of course happened to our largest suitcase. We'd love to just replace it, but we're not somewhere where this is easily, budgetly possible to really replace plus dont have a vehicle.

I agree with the previous poster who recommended putting some straps around the suitcase. These straps are inexpensive and can be found at Target, Walmart, or other stores that sell luggage.

When you check in for your flight, you may want to ask the ticket agent for a bag that they use to put oversized or odd shaped things in like car seats. Explain that you're having an issue with your luggage and you want to ensure that everything will stay contained if the bag should some how open during travel.

Another option may be to mail the suitcase home. Look in the local phone book for pack and ship stores (FedEX, UPS stores or even the USPS). You can take your bag in, box it up and have it sent directly to your house. You'd also have the option of insuring the contents of the box against loss and damage. With this option you wouldn't have to worry about the bag being opened for inspection.

Good luck

The truth is, your suitcase is expected to take wear and tear. If it is unable to perform its stated function of containing the items within, an airline will generally disavow all liability for items lost because it breaks. This is further complicated by the fact that the airlines disavow any liability from security (such as the TSA) opening the suitcase for inspection. Again - you may file a claim with the TSA but it would likely be denied.

Suggestions: If the zipper might break, pack the contents of your bag inside of closable plastic bags so the contents won't just scatter. Also consider buying a strap or two and placing it around your suitcase for added reinforcement. Good luck!

If it opens, your stuff will fall out and you'll loose some things. Nobody will care about your things, and it'll just stay where it falls, and you'll never see it again.

Traveling by plane with a dodgey zipper is only worth doing if the case is full of stuff you don't mind loosing. Just imagine waiting at the luggage carousel and your case appears in tatters, with underwear and stuff hanging out of it.

This happened to me once, and it aint nice.

Unless you can prove the baggage handlers did something to hurt it ( which is next to impossible ) you would be out of luck.
