Cats mask both pain and illness well. Sometimes there are only very slight behaviour differences that indicate something is wrong. And you might not notice unless you are really paying attention.

Is the cat hiding away?
Does it growl or hiss at you when you approach or try to escape?
Refusing to eat or drink?
Does not want to be touched?
Or, maybe wants to be constantly reassured?
Is the cat grooming itself normally?
Is the cat meowing or crying more or louder than normal?
If you touch a certain part of it's body does it strike or try to bite you?
Is it lethergic?
Does it seem depressed?
Does it no longer purr?
Some cats purr to self soothe so if it purrs all the time that could be a sign of illness or pain.

If you notice any abnormal changes then there might be something wrong. You just have to really tune into your cat and let him or her tell you if something is going on. They will tell through a change in their behaviour.

It can be very difficult to tell if a cat is in pain. Some cats will hide even really severe pain. Some signs of pain are depression, lethargy, seeking solitude, reacting to being touched or approached, not eating, having visible third eyelids (the white film that partially covers the eye from the middle corner at times) and more obvious signs like crying out or aggressive behavior when the painful area is touched. Not all cats with one or two of these signs are experiencing pain and not all cats show any of these signs when in pain.

Their meow will be different than normal. Some cats become very confined and don't want to be touched. My kitty howled and hissed when he broke his leg. Cat may sleep a little more than normal also. Sometimes it is hard to tell if a cat is in pain, if you think that something out of the ordinary is going on, go stright to your vet.
