Some are of the belief that you can only be a racist if you are of the majority, that if you are a minority, nothing you say or do can be interpreted as racist. Something to do with who holds the power. I know, it's self-serving and not really fair.
A constant smile, I think, will go a long way in your son's case, as well as constantly and innocently making them explain why they are calling him that until they get tired of it and the term loses its meaning and impact.

The double standard is not fair, but it should be a moot point since you don't really want to teach your son to sink to their level. I feel for the kid, but the unfortunate fact is that a child cannot be different in any way without taking some grief from his peers, and children are cruel and thoughtless in a way adults have learned not to be. If your son were overweight, they'd call him Porky; if he were thin, they'd call him Skeletor; smart = Nerd; slow learner = Retard; tall = Jolly Green Giant; short = Midget; light skinned = Milk; dark skinned = Tar Baby; and so on with every possible difference a group could single out.
If you cannot (or don't want to) move your child to a more diverse school, then the best thing to do is to teach him to let that sort of crap roll off his back. Teach him to laugh along with their jokes and make a few of his own. You may think that this is giving in and justifying their behavior, but the truth is, that will shut them up faster than anything else he can do. Once they realize that he's well aware of his difference and doesn't feel bad about it, they'll back off. Some of them will even respect him and accept him for his clever self-assurance.

No it is not fair nor right. I would first talk with your son's teachers and see if she can stop the teasing and if that doesn't help, go to the principal. How does your son handle this? My son is also in 5th grade, so I know how cruel some kids may be. But you are right, if he was to call them names back like chocolate milk or coffee, those kids families would be really to sue somebody. Good Luck!!

A little girl called my daughter "cracker" at school one day, and my daughter said "How would you like it if I called you something racist like that?" and the other girl actually told my child "I can call you whatever I want to, whitey, but you can't say anything back to me because I'm black". How's that for racial equality?

it is not fair. talk to the teachers and the principal at the school. they should be able to solve the problem. tell your son not to pay any attention to them. i sincerely dislike racial profiling. it is a form of ignorance. hope this helps. good luck
