stone ground mustard is obtained by crushing the mustard seeds with a stone.
You can substitute it by any other kind of dry or paste mustard you have or if you dont have mustard at all you can use some curry, only a bit may be less than half of what your recipe calls for mustard.

Use any brown mustard you want - but if you've got the stone ground, that's the best - the type I get has nice pieces of mustard seed still present. It's not smooth, like yellow mustard.

That brown mustard with the bits of mustard seed mixed in.

Creole mustard, Dijon Mustard, Plain brown Mustard

Do not use yellow mustard. It will have too much vinegar for the recipe.

stone ground mustard refers to a mustard that still has some whole mustard seeds in it. it has a stronger, somewhat spicier mustard flavor than the regular "yellow" mustard. you can use regular mustard, but your recipe will not have the same flavor or texture. just buy a jar of the stone ground, its great on hot dogs, sausages, deli sandwiches, and not to expensive.

Darling,,you would be gorgeous even if you used onion rings for earrings. Btw, mustard is an acceptable substitute for eyeshadow BUT you'll need a trained hotdog makeup specialist to apply it for you ;) I'm not sure what this answer means. It's Sunday and I'm off my game.

For stone ground, the mustard seed has a coarser grind. Any mustard should work, except maybe grey poupon, as it will have horseradish added, and you may not want that.
