Wabbit Sniper is right on this one. In Pennsylvania it did start with the Germans who settled here and had to settle for the groundhog. Beyond that, Groundhog Day is a mid winter celebration - the half way point between the first day of winter and the first day of spring. Many cultures celebrate this day. It means that after a long datrk winter the sun is finally on its ay back!

My guess would be that it started somewhere in Germany, where moles or something came out of the ground in spring, was afraid of their shadows, and slipped back in their dens. The Germans celebrated this day for some reason and came to the U.S. to carry it on, but they couldn't find the animal they were looking for and had to settle with groundhogs.

Some animal rights freak in Germany made it up as a way to get sympathy for what should have been used as a target.
