We are to be buried with Christ in baptisim. It is only a symbol that the old man is now dead and is buried as Christ was buried.Never bury anything unless it is dead first. As we come up out of the water it is as if we are coming up out of the grave as Christ did.We are saying to the world that the old person you once knew is now dead and you are going to see a brand new person from now on. Rom. 6:4. You can drown in your sins but you will never drown sin , I don't care how much water you want to use.It takes the Blood of Jesus to forgive sin.Nothing else will do.

Dear Don,

Water baptism does not forgive or "wash away" any sin. The word "baptism" means washing. "Baptism" is symbolic or a shadow--it has no real substance. First, sin is a transgression of the law of God. The Bible tells us that the wages of sin is death. This is not physical death, as you can readily see, because all of us sin multiple times every day. The death spoken of is the second death and that is when a person is cast into hell for eternity. That is what we ALL deserve because ALL of us have sinned. So you are probably wondering, "How can any of us be saved from eternal damnation?" God in His great mercy and love provided a "substitute" that could stand in the place of those whom He had chosen to rescue (save) from damnation. That is the Lord Jesus Christ. It was not the physical suffering that Jesus endured that paid the sin penalty, no it is what we could not see. Christ, beginning in the Garden of Gethsemanae was enduring the equivalent of spending an eternity in hell condensed into the hours of the garden to when He said, "It is finished" on the cross.
However, lets get back to baptism. The water of baptism is representative of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. In Ephesians 5:26 we read, "That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word" Hearing the Gospel is the vehicle by which God saves a person or washes him from his sins. In Romans 10:17 we read, "So then, faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the word of God." FAITH is a synonym for Jesus Christ. So then, Christ cometh by hearing and hearing by the word of God. God has elected certin ones to be saved (Ephesians 1:3-5) but none of us knows who these "elect" are. God is no respector of persons so may be one of the elect. Keep reading the Bible, and praying that the Lord will have mercy on you. Remember Bible intelligence is not a prerequisite for salvation. God can save a baby that cannot even speak as well as an old man. The environment in which He (God) saves is the hearing of the Bible. So keep reading and praying.

You are correct that nothing but the blood can wash away sins. But, how do we contact that blood?

As you have pointed out, we are "baptized into his death" or "burried with him in baptism" (Romans 6:3-13, Colossians 2:12).

The blood of Christ saves us from our sins, and it was shed at his death. (Romans 5:8-10) Romans 6 (which probably is on the same page in your Bible as these verses ftom Romans 5) tells us how we contact that blood.

To be saved we must "obey the Gospel". (2 Thessalonians 1:8, 1 Peter 4:17) According to 1 Corinthians 15:1-4, "the Gospel" that Paul preached and delivered to them was the death, burial and resurection of Christ.

We must obey this Gospel to be saved! But how do you obey the death, burial, and resurection of Christ? We do not have to literally die, be literally buried, and literally have to rise from the dead!

Let's go back to Romans 6. Verses 17-18 say, "But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you. Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness." What we obey is a "form" of that doctrine. The form of the death, burial and resurection that we are to obey is baptism (verses 3-4)!

Jesus commanded baptism! (Mark 16:16, Matthew 28:18-20) We must be baptised to obey him. Jesus is "the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey Him" (Hebrews 5:9).

We cannot physically contact Christ at His death, therefore God has given us this form of that action for us to have that connection. It is at this point we are "born again" or we "rise to walk in newness of life" (Romans 6:4). We cannot be saved if we are not born into this new life.

We are saved through baptism because that is the way God set it up for us to contact His Son's death.

It was believed that this ritual was done by John the baptist and symbolizes that the sin is washed away after baptism as how dirt is washed away after a bath. It is one of the catholic practices of forgiveness. Another one is thru confession, and penetance during lent. Its just a symbolization and people are renewed but again can go back having sins.

Dear Don,

Water baptism in and of itself has no power whatsoever to forgive sin. It is symbolic as several posters have said.

God, the Author of life, is the only One who can forgive sin and it is only through faith in the perfect sacrifice of Jesus' death on the cross.

I am about to celebrate the first anniversary of my own water baptism on February 19. Although I had been born again in 1982, it took me awhile to seek out the water baptism.

Accepting Jesus Christ and repenting of your sins is the way to be forgiven. Baptism is just symbolizing the washing away of sins and being born again. Once the sins are repented, they are forgotten by God. You are also to forgive others as God forgave you.

It dosn't. Jesus forgive sin's once you confess them. Baptism by water is a public statement telling everyone that you believe in Jesus Christ as the Lord God and that he died for your sin on the cross.

Water baptism is a symbolic procedure signifying our giving up the old body and returning in the knew body. By going under water, your old self leaves. When you return up, you are cleansed of your sins as a "symbol" and our of Christ. To truly forgive your sins, you must ask God to forgive them of you!

It doesn't. The forgiveness of sins only comes by accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior.

You have remission (forgivness) of your sins when you are baptized because it is an act of obedience through faith. The Bible says in Acts 2:38 to "Repent and be baptised for the remission of of your sins. There is not way that just dunking someone under the water alone can wash away sins. It is connected to faith and obedience. Just like marching around the walls of Jericho and blowing trumpets could never make them fall down. God made the walls come down because the Israelites OBEYED Him

FAITH is the key.

But the Bible says, that your sins are washed away through baptism.

You bury the old self and raised to a new life. Read Romans 6, that will help.

But it basically forgives sins by putting you touch with the sacrifical benefits of Jesus' crucifiction.
