Wood is derived from Old English, Forest is Latin in origin.
Precious little difference in meaning.

Wood:
1 a : a dense growth of trees usually greater in extent than a grove and smaller than a forest -- often used in plural but singular or plural in construction

Forest:
1 : a dense growth of trees and underbrush covering a large tract
2 : a tract of wooded land in England formerly owned by the sovereign and used for game

Size. A wood is normally a small area a forest is usually a lot bigger. However some areas which were designated forests but have been severely cleared to the point of barely being woods are often still referred to as forests.

There's no difference. "Wood" isn't used much anymore (except -I dunno- maybe in England). You hear "woods" more often in the states. I think "forest" is a little bit fancier, & more poetic or literary. The only place I can remember hearing "wood," offhand, is in "when Birnham Wood come to Dunsinane," in Shakespeare's MacBeth. But they mean the same thing. See the links below, which look the same here, but one is for "wood" and the other for "forest."

Forest is generally used to describe large areas of commercial conifer plantations. Wood is a term used to describe areas of native broadleaved woodland (in the UK anyway).
