Basically lets say someone assaults someone, and if the person has that persons cell phone number, could police track them based soley on having their cell phone number? Always wondered

Cell phones can actually be located by triangulating the signal to pinpoint with pretty good accuracy where the person is located in real time. I read a story about a girl who was kidnapped and made a call on her cell phone, the police triangulated the signal and determined where she was so she could be rescued.
