Help me out- I'm pretty ignorant when it comes to alcohol. OK on my 21st birthday this year I'm trying to decide what my first drink should be: a Jose Cuervo margarita or a Captain Morgan piña colada. But here's the thing: I actually don't want to get drunk, I just want to enjoy the taste. I'm not sure if I could handle too much alcohol and I certainly don't want to throw up.

You really need to look at the alcohol percentage on the bottle.

Both will have about the same amount of alcohol. That is around 40% vol. or 80 proof as it be.
If you are looking for good flavor then I would definitely go with something of a better quality and stay away from Cuervo. Not much of a fan of Captain Morgan either as there are much better rums out there.
I am a very devout tequila drinker but if I had to choose between Cuervo and Capt. Morgan I would go with the Captain.

Look at the bottles. The "proof" on the bottle is twice the alcohol content. So if you buy 80 proof tequila, you're getting 40% alcohol. If you buy 151 rum, you get 75.5% alcohol, etc. Most Tequilas are between 76 and 92 proof. Rums run the gambit from 42 proof (many producers) to a 180 proof from Barbancourt that I strongly recommend you cut with something.

The two choices you mentioned are Jose Cuervo (80 proof) and Captain Morgan's (runs the scale from 42 proof to 80 proof depending on the flavor of choice). Both brands have exceptional taste. Of those choices, I personally recommend Captain Morgans Spiced rum (either Original or Silver) since they have a mild flavors and no after taste. Most tequilas have an after taste that few people find pleasant.

Happy Birthday!

Most hard liquor is available in a variety of "proofs." The proof describes the percentage of alcohol by volume in the liquor. 80 proof is fairly common, and while people think that 100 proof is the truly hard core stuff, it is neither 100% alcohol nor the strongest liquor you can buy. College boys like to think they're big men when they drink Wild Turkey 101 (proof), but Bacardi 151 rum has more alcohol by volume and it's a smoother drink.

You can choose rum or tequila of equal proof, and it will still depend on how much of either liquor is used in the drink you choose. 4 oz of 80 proof tequila is still twice as much alcohol as 2 oz of 80 proof rum.

You should tell the bartender that it's your first drink and you have no desire to get hammered and puke in the ladies room, so you would appreciate it if he would make a nice, tasty, ladylike drink for you.

Further, it doesn't hurt to let him know that you would appreciate it if he helps you avoid peer pressure to do shots, etc. I once had a bartender pour completely alcohol free shots for me at a bachelorette party, sat back and watched everyone else get hammered, and was able to function the next day. Most bartenders will help you out if they understand that you're not a cheapskate or a party pooper, and you just want to be responsible. Be sure to TIP like you're drinking full-fledged drinks.

It doesn't matter. Jose Cuervo and Capt'n Morgan are both 80 proof liquors. Get whichever you think you'd enjoy more. A lot of new drinkers find the strong tequila taste of a margarita unenjoyable. Happy birthday and have fun! It's nice to hear someone actually being responsible on their 21st and not drinking as much as they can! :)

And just so you know... it really depends on the brand of liquor how strong it is. They make a 92 Proof Rum called Sailor Jerry's that I really like and Bacardi 151.. which is 75.5% liquor and flamable.

Most tequilas are 80 proof, as are most regular rums. Flavored rums, however are usually a little lower in alcohol content. As far as you first drink, you should probably have something that is sweeter and a little fruity, like the pina colada(tell the bartender to add a little kahlua, its not high in alcohol, and will taste phenomenal). If you have never had a margarita, i would ease into that one slowly, and have your bartender add a splash of OJ.

PS the "proof" of the liquor is basically double what the alcohol content by volume is. 40% alcohol=80 proof

Don't be worried if you throw up...that is just part of a 21st birthday celebration. Most of us probably threw up. As far as the liquors, have you considered any of these flavored vodkas. As a former bartender, I know that vodka is the easiest to make taste good. Jose and the Captain are both about the same as far as how strong they are, but something about Jose just makes people start to forget things. If you don't want to get drunk, there is no reason to get into tequila. Just make sure whatever you do, have friends around to take care of you(for example, carry you home after you pass out on the bar). Happy birthday!

I see u r gettin a lot of ignorant answers, so let a Mexican explain u the drinking needs.

Tequila has a varied alcohol volume of 35-55%, being in the US, u'll probably get one that has 45%.

Captain Morgan Rum being a tropical rum has less than 40%

More than the alcohol percentage, if u dont want to get drunk just tipsy, here is what u have to do.
Eat well befor eu start drinking, say an hour and a half before. Drink slowly, drinking, unlike many americans in their teens and twenties think, is about enjoying it, not gettin plastered. So drink say a drink every 45 mins, and in between every drink have a glass of water, that helps u take time and go to the bathroom.

Have fun and Happy B-day. Oh yeha, avoid shots if u dont wanna get drunk!!

It's not whether rum is stronger than tequila - it's what proof each one is. And I'm pretty sure that Jose & Capt'n are the same. As far as not getting drunk, if you have a glass of water every other drink, you'll stay hydrated and not get a hangover. Or, if you think people will be buying you shots, just stick w/drinking soda/water and do the shots when they come your way. Anyhoo - Happy Birthday.

All alcohol comes in variety of alcohol content called "proof." If you read the proof and divide that in half, you'll get the exact percentage of alcohol. The highest proof you can get is 200 proof, which equals to 100% alcohol, not really stuff for drinking (i think you could put that in your car!). But if it's rum, Bacardi makes a 101 proof rum = 50.5% alcohol. Watch out, and ask the bartender or waitress what proof it is before you order (sorry I don't think they'll let you taste it before ordering, damn ATF!)

Tequila is stronger but I recommend drinking the rum, especially if you have a RumRunner. Google the recipe for a RumRunner and you will enjoy it. It is mixed with fruit juices and is delicious. Tequila you can only mix with a few things and is hard to drink a lot of if you have little tolerance to alcohol. Rum is a mellower buzz and easier to handle.
