A calorie is a unit of energy. A kcal, or kilocalorie, is 1000 of said units. A kcal is usually denoted as a Calorie(note the capital "c"). And a Calorie(kcal) is what you read on food labels. One food Calorie is actually 1000 calories. Cool, huh?

any time you see the amount of "calories" in a recipe, it's really k-cals ("k" meaning "kilo", or 1000). so if it says 100 calories, it's really 100,000 calories. don't be alarmed, this also applies to the "calories" you burn off while exercising.
