I have 2 girls that I did not teach to read before school. I could have but I did not want them to be too bored in Kindergarden. My oldest wa reading small words at 5 and books by age 6. My youngest is 5 and is reading small words now and is starting on little books like Dr Seuss.

My son will be 5 in February and has been reading for about 2 months. By reading, I mean he can read an early reader book geared for Kindergarden and first grade, although he may need help with one or two words per page, especially the pages that have a paragraph, not a sentence by itself.

My son was 4 when he learned to read basic words like dog, cat, blue, truck etc. But words like what, think, church etc came a bit later because he didn't know how to put the "th" together to make the sound. He is almost 5 and knows more words each day.

My three and a half year old reads some small words with out trying but then when you ask him if he recognizes words or ask him to read a word he says he can't.
Thanks to educations toys and videos more kids are entering school as readers and in the least are already learning "sight words" at 5 or 6 in kindergarden.

I read to my boys every night and they were taught to read well in Kindergarten (age 5). By age 7 my youngest son was reading at a high school level.
Now that I have a 2 year old (older ones are 10 and 12), its like starting all over again. He cant read but he can tell me the last word on every page of his dinosaur book because we read it all the time.
As long as you raise your children around books from an early age they will love to read.
