Not on your federal tax return unless you use your place for a home office or home business. On California, there is a renter's credit, but you have to be very low income and the credit isn't all that much anyway.

In California I was once able to claim the renter's credit but it is not what you spend on rent, but a way way low amount of credit. I believe the year I did it my rent was 1000 a month but the credit was only 100 dollars total deduction for the entire year.

If you're self employed or have a home business, you can deduct your office space off rent but only the space used for business.

No, not as a deduction, unless you are claiming a home office deduction for business use of your home. California does provide for a renter's credit though, which is a dollar for dollar reduction to your tax liability.
