At this season, it is likely to be pollen related or mold/mildew..But household cleaners often aggravate the condition..chemicals such as Swiffer Wet jet, Carpet cleaners, air fresheners, etc..
It may be of help to feed a food that doesn't contain corn or wheat.

My yellow Lab does the same thing but he does it becuase of allergies. I treat him for allergies and that prevents the chewing. But if allergies have been ruled out the bitter apple spray works well and is harmless. If he is only chewing his hind legs you should be okay spraying only that area down. Did your vet say anyhting about allergies because without treatment my dog would be completely bald. I use holistic treatments which work way better that anyhting the vet gave me and I also use a spray called Richard's Organic Incredible skin spray. It is the only stuff that works to stop itching for whatever reason.

My dog has done it for the past 2.5 years (he is 3 years old). He has been to 3 vets, been on prednisone, omega 3, fish oils, etc. He will clear up for about a week but then is chewed raw agian. The vets don't know what it is. It is not food allergies. Ask your vet about prednisone or an antibiodic. I found that udder ointment helps sooth my dog a little but for only about 6 hours.

Check his dog food. Check for by products or corn. Then make sure that the food doesn't have any wheat in it. Wheat is the #1 culprit for skin allergies.
After you've switched his food think about getting a humidifier. The dry air could be drying out his skin causing him to itch and flake making it irritated and initating him to chew.
Tegrin shampoo is really good for the dog and dry itchy skin. I have a golden retriever who used to have skin allergies (till we switched her food to Nutro Lamb and Rice formula) and we bath her with Tegrin (dandruff shampoo) whenever she needs a bath.
If Tegrin isn't an option get an oatmeal based moisturizing shampoo and conditioner for puppies (they are less harsh than dog shampoos).
Good Luck

I would agree with the bitter apple spray, my mother was a breeder and this is what we always used. Also, you can use an Elizabethan collar - you know the cone collars that make your pup look like a walking satellite dish - until it clears up.
He may be itching or biting out of nervousness. You can calm him down using some chamomile - like the tea. We always would dump some of a tea bag into their food or snack (preferably something sticky that the tea can stick too).
Good luck!

You need one of those megaphone collars. Some pet supply stores sell them or you can get one from a vet. But then you have to get to the source of the problem. What is the humidity level of your home? You may want to buy a humidifier for him. Humidity should be around 45 % - as close to that as possible. Is he getting the right food for his type of breed? Look into that. Find out if he has a skin disorder. It may be ringworm or something. Check for any other signs. My dog gets a lot of ticks from the woods.

If you live in an area where foxes are common have him checked for a disease called sarcoptic mange, they pick it up from fox feces and the symptoms are chewing of the tail and legs, if there are no foxes around I'd have him checked anyway since he may have been exposed in other ways.

Sounds like he has an allergy to something. Check the kind of food he has, the type of clothes detergent you use, etc.
He could also be bored. Make sure to take him outside and let him get all of his energy out before letting him back in the house.

your dog probably has an allergy and he is biting b/c his skin is itchy...take him back to the vet and have him checked for allergies. the vet might put him on a steroid for a few weeks... it will stop his itchiness and his biting.
