It's true the Jews stopped using God's name Jehovah, because they felt it was too sacred to say or that they would use it in vain. In it's place they would say or put Lord or God. Which is why Jehovah's name was taken out of many bibles.
I did not realize that the reason some put G-d was because of the same reason. God is just a title. There are many God's, when you just say God, you don't know which one someone is talking about.

It's from certain cross-sections of Judaism, which consider the depiction of the name of God to break the commandment about tkaing the Name of god in vain.

It's a Jewish belief, that man is not worthy to utter the name of god.
I know a secular Jew, who does not utter the name of god. He says he doesn't believe but why mess with a 6000 year old rule.

It's a jewish thing. It was considered disrespectful to write "god" because someone could disrespect "his name" when it was written down - by burning it or trashing it.
Similar to how many americans feel about the flag I suppose.

G minus D?
Maybe it's a sign of respect, you know, like when we write President B--h.
