I am looking for some ideas on what requirements I should use to judge an essay contest I am hosting. The contest will be for children who have lost their hair due to alopecia. You can see the contest info. Here www.bandanasbyhalle.com/contest.html. Take a look and please give me some ideas on how I can judge the essays. I know each story will be sad so I don't want to just base it on that. Only serious answers please.

Make a scoring key:
(ex) content: 50%
Grammar/Spelling: 25%
style: 10%
information: 15%

You can change the percentage and requirements based on what you feel is important.

You need a Rubric --- a plan of what is needed to be good.

The following website as a good Rubric:

-------------------------------------------------------

Using the Scoring Guide in conjunction with the sample essays selected for training.

Reading quickly to gain an impression of the whole essay.

Reading the entire essay before scoring, and then scoring immediately.

Reading supportively, looking for and rewarding what is done well rather than what is done badly or omitted.

Ignoring the quality of handwriting.

Judging an essay by its quality, not by its length.

Understanding that no one aspect of writing (coherence, diction, grammar, etc.) is more important than another, and that no aspect of writing is to be ignored.
