When you crack your jaw, the popping sound you hear is the disc in your jaw joint slipping back into place. It may be TMJ. Lots of people have it to varying degrees - myself included. Different people have different symptoms - some of them painful -others not so painful. My jaw used to crack alot - and then it stopped. A cracking jaw is actually an early symptom of TMJ. When your jaw doesn't crack as much that is a bad sign (if you haven't had treatment) because your disc is actually slipping farther out of place and doesn't pop in as readily. My advice is to have it checked out before it gets worse. It will probably be years before it is a real problem, but if you let it go unchecked it could mean problems down the road.

I wouldn't think that cracking your jaw would cause lockjaw but it may cause inflamation of the joint that could be painful. I would ask your physician or your dentist at your next visit just to be sure.

As far as I know, lockjaw is caused by tetanus. Popping your jaw shouldn't cause it, but it's probably not that good for you anyways.

No. Lockjaw is another name for tetanus, which is only caused by a microorganism. It is a horrible, fatal - but thankfully preventable - disease. You can get tetanus if you step on a nail or cut yourself on something sharp. That's why it is advisable to keep tetanus shots up to date.
