I am an additional cardholder on two accounts that my ex roommate has flaked on. I can't locate him and I am not the primary on the accounts, but they both show up on my credit reports and it is dinging me now that I need to get a mortgage. I need a quick way to get these off. I called one and had success (Juniper Bank) but Chevron has stuck to their guns and said they would keep reporting me. Are they legally allowed to report "additional cardholders" since it clearly states in terms and agreements that the PRIMARY is responsible for the account??
Thanks.......

If you put your SSN on that application as a co-applicant and signed, your responsible for the debt if the primary wiggs out. If you did not sign the cardholder agreement, they have no contract with you and cannot come after you. If your name is in fact on the account, try closing them immediately. Sometimes they will tell you they need both parties to do that, and they'll probably need it in writing. Do what you need to do.... to get those accounts closed. If the primary wiggs out, you'll have to pay on them to keep your credit score up. The lesson is never to co sign on any account unless your married and have the ability to close the account at will without the other partys permission. I believe its how you put the account down on the application. If you say John Bon AND Mary Bon, then you both have to give permission, if it says John Bon OR Mary Bon then either has the power.

Never, ever, cosign for anyone. No matter how much you love them, you have to love yourself more.
