Because we are visual creatures ...
Most care how everything else looks... clothes, hair, face, body, car, boyfriend/girlfriend ...

... this is no different.

Visual appeal, that's all.

Personally, I agree with you that it's much ado about nothing.

I've had Vista Ultimate since last November & the thrill soon wears off.... they snare us more with visuals than substance.

I've been using the full release of Vista Ultimate 64 bit (RTM - release to manufacturers)since last November....
... I have it on a separate hard drive so that I can still keep XP Media Center 2005 & boot from the one of my choosing.

To be totally honest, at first I was very impressed but now realize that besides the far better graphics it really doesn't do that much more for me than XP Media Center.

All the devices on my HP Media Center unit are properly detected & all 64 bit drivers for it are working properly.

Most all my 32 bit software works fine on it, but still I find myself booting into the old operating system more & more often. Vista is a bit too busy for me & XP Media Center really does all I need it to do.

I confess I was mostly attracted by the bells & whistles & am glad I had the opportunity to get it for free from my job rather than pay for it & regret it.

If it comes with a new PC ... fine.
If not & you have XP Pro or Media Center ... don't bother.

It is pretty but Vista is more than a pretty face, I'm not going through the explanation again, take the time to read about Vista yourself. I've explained this enough on here that I'm almost tired of people asking questions about it.

It's not Alt-Tab... Windows-Tab is the 3D cycling. Alt-Tab remains the same.

Then there is Aero glass and the cool maximize, minimize effects and the transparency. Let's not forget a search that actually works and there is no more of that annoying animated dog that can never actually find what you are looking for. Vista finds it and does it with style. Viva la Vista!

I've had Vista on both my computers for about a week now and I never want to see the insipid useless operating system that is XP again.

I didn't think anyone was that excited about it. Maybe you hang out with nerds.

Because people are stupid and easily distracted by pretty colorful and shiny things.
