I give your question a star.
Excellent Question.

I would keep the half. Then donate the other half to various free (as in freedom) organizations, with the stipulation that they keep half and donate the other half to other charities etc, with the continuing stipulation that the money be split when received. In theory this works like an inverted pyramid scheme. Where you get the big amount first, then give half away to the people (or single entity) below you, in the pyramid. You could imagine it like pouring water into a stack of glasses, with the biggest glasses near the top. All the glasses would get water, some more than others.

Half would automatically go to the IRS because that would put me in the 50% tax bracket. Then another 6% would go to the State of Massachusetts where I live. So with the $440,000 that is left, I would go to Charity Navigator and find out which charities get most of the donations directly to the people that need it.

I would give it to a small charity like a Children's Museum or a Symphony Orchestra as an endowment. The organization could have the $500,000 for a permanently restricted purpose (it is like a trust fund) and the income from the $500,000 investment would be used for unrestricted purposes (like paying the bills or salaries). Don't give it to the big guys...they will use 99% of it to pay their 1/2 million dollar a year salary to the CEO of the organization.
The small charities will make better use of the funds.

When cheap, flimsy McMansions cost half a million? A million dollars is NOTHING anymore...I don't donate, I do- I take homeless people to dinner ( not just throw a aluminum foil swan at them with my leftovers like they were dogs begging for table scraps.)
I took sexually homeless kids off the street and invited them into my home, fed, clothed, and gave them attention -just listening to someone is sometimes the best gift you can give. I was halfway homeless myself living in space without heat or appliances like a stove or refrigirator. A blanket on a floor and a roof over my head. I don't trust charities- I go to some so called "charities" and their offices are palaces and everyone wearing Gucci- where would my donation go- into trying to get more donations- it's a vicious circle- Save your money and help the brother right outside your front door with a warm blanket and a bed or a meal meal indoors at a restaurant or teach under privileged children and illiterate adults to read.
I wish money were a solution- the US would have NO problems.
Actions still speak louder than the almighty dollar ever will

If I were given 1 million dollars and had to donate half, I would give it to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. They treat all sick children. It doesn't matter if they can pay or not. They take donations from people to help them pay for the research and medicine. The people that work there are angels sent from heaven.

I would start my own charity, the half mil would be invested, with the dividends being used to fund the charity.
I would pick one hard working, but very poor family, possible a single parent family, who really need only one thing to help them make it - an education. The charity would provide money to complete a bachelors' degree, supplement the income lost by going to school full time, and pay for books.
Just think the difference it would make to take a family living in poverty, and educate the mother, who'd like to be a registered nurse. . .Four years later, she's achieved her nursing degree. Before the program, she made mimimum wage - after the program, she can start at $18 an hour.
Or take the father who makes minimum wage, and under the same program, he's able to become a teacher. . . .or whatever!

I would not buy $500,000 worth of stuff, as stuff is just that..stuff. I would put it into an investment tool, think about it, research it and then re-invest in the best place to make the money earn more money. I would give the rest to a charity that gives an education to those who cannot get one otherwise. But not to just hand out, but to have a trust fund that actually researches who deserves it, not due to skin color or anything like that. I would put a ceiling on how much the administrators of the trust fund would receive, so that they don't reap any rewards. They, too, must think of charity, not greed. To me education is an investment, just like money, so in essence I would be re-investing all of the lottery. Dreams, but oh, how I wish I could help educate the whole world. Maybe we would have more peace and less war. I would start with putting all of congress back through an educational system where they learn less of "me" and a whole more of "others."

If I had to donate half of my Million dollars, I would give a large portion of it to Alzheimer's Research because my father was afflicted with the disease and died at the young age of 64, it is such a horrible disease and it literally robs you of your life and future and it such a hard disease for anybody to deal with. My dad's mother also was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease. I would give another portion of it to Cancer Research because so many people are dying of Cancer and I have also had family members die of that also. If there was anymore of the half left over, I would donate the rest to make sure that abandoned animals or animals in shelters have a good place to live out the rest of their lives without fear of being euthinized.
