Annoying isn't it, this club is normally used by old guys to good effect.
I remember one guy in his late sixites who was using this instead of his woods, right off the tee he wasn't getting any great distance but he was hitting it straight down the middle. Very annoying. PLUS he was using it off the fairway .
It is a fearsome club, not for the faint hearted.

This is a much different question today than it was 30 years ago when everyone used blades. With today's cavity back/game improvement irons, it's really not that hard for an ametuer. That being said, it makes little sense to even try, b/c today's hybrid clubs are much easier to hit, go the same distance, go higher and stop faster.
However, if you've ever tried to hit blades, you know that even a 7 iron requires precise contact and hitting a 1-iron would be next to impossible. Jack Nicklaus was the best back in his day, made famous by his approach on 15 (I think) into the par 5 over water at Augusta en route to beating Seve Ballesteros for his last Masters.

I used to hit a Ping Eye II One-Iron before I learned how to hit a Driver. It was difficult but better than how I hit a Driver. I usually only hit it about 200 yards. I really had a tough time with a Driver when I was a beginner.

I sometimes carry a 13 degree driving iron (looks kinda like the titleist hybrid iron), especially when it is windy. I can carry it around 205 (normal driver carry is 225). I love it cause it plays like a hybrid but gets the ball on a penetrating trajectory. I can hit it really well and better than some of my friends' drivers. Just keep practicing to get good with one!

Jack Nicklaus used to hit a 1-iron frequently. He almost holed one in the U.S. Open at Pebble Beach on a par-3 hole that was one of the greatest shots ever.

I would guess John Daily does, since he also hits a 0 iron.
Found 1 reference, did not have time to look for more.
