My work computer has Windows 98 (I think), and when I try to open a saved document at home on XP it looks different and I can't edit it properly. Can anyone help?

Just to clarify things a little bit, MS Windows is sold separately from Microsoft Office, you can right now purchase one of the following 2007 versions, this is the newest version from Microsoft:

1.- MS Office Home and Student version and the cost is $149.99
2.- MS Office Standard 2007 and the cost is $399.99
3.- MS Office Small Business 2007 and the cost is 449.99
4.- MS Office Professional 2007 and the cost is $499.99
5.- MS Office Ultimate 2007 and the cost if $679.99

Microsoft Office XP is not sold any more, but you do have an alternative, and the great thing about it is that is free, just click on the link

this is an free open source Office Suite, it has many, and then some, of the features that MS Office XP has and you can open and save documents is the MS Office format and into the WordPerfect format. Hope this helps.

Lets assume you have Word on both PC's. If the version of Word on your home computer is a later version than that on your work computer then you will not be able to edit it.

It would work the other way round. A document saved in say Word 97 could be opened in Word 2003 and edited and saved.

A way round would be to open the document on your home PC and SAVE AS (F12). In the SAVE AS TYPE area select Word 97-2003 in the list - this will probably work then.

To open and edit most Word documents, you need to install MS Word. It's part of the MS Office package and available at most office supply stores and computer stores as well as online.

You can also try editing it in Notepad or Open Office (http://www.openoffice.org/), but results may be iffy.
