Why are some people so against feeding people food? If nayone has ever read dog food ingredients, i'm sure most of the stuff listed is what i would consider "people" food. What do you think they ate before dog food was invented. obviuosly I don't mean junk food, I don't beleive even people should eat that, but regular table scraps of veggies and meat wom't kill a dog I'm sure.

Ok, I don't mean feeding people food as their regular food, as I know their food contains vitamins/minerals designed for them. I just want to know why some people think it's bad. I feed my puppy Authority and home made food, which contains everything I would eat. My puppy is 16 weeks old and has never had runny stools or upset stomach because of this, to think it would cause stomach prblems is ricdiculous. And if you only feed scraps in their bowl, why would they beg? They don't know it came from your plate?

Many people feed their dogs regular food, such as raw chicken (sometimes boiled), cooked veggies, fruit, and other raw meat. That is fine....its the "other" foods, or the improperly cooked foods that are bad. Fried, too many spices/seasoning, etc that cause problems. And obviously, no sugar.

I had a Mini Schnauzer several years ago that was eating good dry dog food, but was not doing well at all. Her skin was flaky and she was getting really heavy and sleeping all the time. I switched to using only a little dry dog food (Science Diet the mixed blend) and made the rest of her allotment out of either chicken or lean hamburger, rice or potatoes, peas or green beans plus 250 mg Vitamin C. Within 6 months my vet looked at her and called his assistant in to say, "Look at her...she looks like a young dog again" . I was so proud to have figured this out myself without having to resort to medication.

I think the criteria for people food is not to give them anything with grease, salt or sugar or anything else that we consider bad for us, but we eat it anyway. There are some veggies that will harm them such as onions, so be careful with that. The SPCA has a list of items that are really bad for dogs to eat. And the smaller the dog, the worse the reaction.

Depends on what "people" food you feed them. Table scraps can contain high amounts of sodium, sugar, spices, herbs, and MSG that can harm a dogs digestive systems. Cooked food also can be a problem in the fact that the dog may get too much or too little of one things. If your feeding a balanced diet of healthy people food then there is no problem, but if you scrape you plate after hamburger helper night, thats not a good idea. Pastas and breads have too much carbohydrates, Hamburger is cooked beef and added salt, cheese can cause bloat and digestive enzyme problems and may just give him the squrits. Many Herbs and spices can and are deadly. There is a good diet recipe to follow that is people food oriented and that is the B.A.R.F diet but it requires more than just scraping the plate into the dogs dish. You have to actually prepare it. Heres a link if your intrested. its what I use to feed my 6 dogs, and a 1/2 cup of hard dog food with it.

Depends on what kind of "people food" you're giving them. If you're giving them the processsed junk food that a lot of people eat, well it's just as bad for the dog as it is for you. OTOH if you're preparing a balanced, varied diet using the same ingredients you'd use to prepare yourself a healthy meal (with some exceptions), then there's no reason why your dog can't have it. Most of my dogs eat kibble, but I do have one on a homemade diet right now, the rest of them get occasional treats like liver, chicken backs, raw veggies etc. If I had the time and money they'd ALL be on a homemade diet.

A lot of people are brainwashed by the dog food industry into believing their dogs are going to die if they eat anything other than dog food......

You make a good point - yes, veggies and meat would be fine, as long as it is provided in a form taht dogs can digest. Look up BARF diet - there are many who feed their dogs raw food.

However, kitchen scraps are no good. Some of the foods that we like are not good for dogs ( eg. onions). The salt and the spices are not good either. Cooked chicken bones, for example, can hurt a dog. Also, our food has too many additives that may not be needed by a dog's digestive system.

I just think that if you give a dog normal food, you should make sure that it doesn't have any additives etc, though you could say the same about humans. Meat and veg is fine for dogs, but dog food has been designed to give them specific vitamins and so on in a balanced way. Though it can be ridiculously expensive.

There's a short list of people foods that are harmful to digs : onions, garlic, chives, chocolate, grapes, avocados - these are all to be avoided.

But for people like me, who spend a lot of time training their dog, human food used as treats is pretty necessary! I use : salmon, deli meats (diced) boiled chicken, all different kinds of cheese, and I make a puree of broccoli and dandelion greens to add in to their food.
I would be cautious about table scraps because of the complex ingredients. A leftover piece of meat that had been cooked with onions, for example, would not be OK.

May want to think again! Fruits and veggies are ok (except for grapes, rasins, and onions) but any meat needs to be avoided. Besided causing vomiting or diarrhea, other problems such as pancreatitis can kill pets. Also depends on what kind of food your feeding your pet as to what ingredients, sure they sell Ol'Roy out at walmart but that doesn't mean that it has been tested and approved by Vets. Use a good quality food Eukanuba, Iams, Royal Canin, Hills.

'People' food is probably a lot healthier for dogs than dog food is, unless you're buying the designer stuff.

Some of the labels I've read on dry dog food in the big huge bags scares me... when the ingredients include anything from 30-70% 'other'...

Gotta wonder what that 'other' is...

And as you point out - dogs predate dog food by quite a long time (a few thousand years... at least).

And lets face it - they also eat pretty much anything...

It is not good for animals to consume people food Half the food we eat is not good for us either. The food and drug addminatration experiments with us humans daily.Thats why the change and say its not good for us now when they wanted us to comsume it 5 years earlier. They have made dog food with the nutrition that they think a dog needs.I can say they know better then I.Thats their job.You know that saying Its for your pets long and happier life.So Im sure your dog will live on people food but it wont be has healthy as would be with dog food.Good luck.

People are so against feeding dogs, "people food" is because sometimes, it causes a different effect on dogs, than it does on humans, such as things with sugar, chocolate or onions in them.
Most dog foods, contain a very high amount of sugar in them, which is why I opt for the natural variety of dog food.
Such as "Authority".
Feeding dogs small scraps of veggies and meat, wont kill a dog, but it isn't as healthy as feeding him his food, because the food contains key vitamins and minerals, in it that are neccesary for him to be healthy. If you feed a dog a balanced amount of fruits, vegtables, meats, and plain yogurt, then he or she can live very happily. But I still give our dog daily multivitamins.
