I have long hair, so I usually don't get out of the salon for under $150. I don't have the money right now, so I'd like to try a store-bought color to tone down my highlights, which are becoming brassy, and cover my grey. Would henna and coffee work? Are there any brands that are "fool-proof"?

i highly recommend you do not do the store bought colour since your hair is brassy. first, it may not colour evenly as your hair may have different shades in it right now and it may react to the colour of your hair as is. also, it will colour in different tones simply because natural hair and colour hair absorb at different speeds. second, even henna can damage your hair and cause breakage. note that henna is one of the hardest colouring products to get out of your hair. it will be problematic if you are not pleased with it or wish to change it in the future. if you find it expensive to get your hair highlighted, try getting your colourist to do a solid colour in your hair. another suggestion is find a hairstyling academy that has student colourists. they are supervised and generally do a great job as they are attentive and aim to please. if you are in a large city, aveda academies are really good.

I'm a hairdresser and never hardly ever recomend products that aren't proffessional, but the answer is yes.If you just want to tone down the brassyness why not get a hair rinse called fanciful I'm not sure but I think Loreal makes it or u can buy it at a beauty supply I like the color spun sand and all u do is shampoo towel dry and put it in your hair and comb through it.It only last from shampoo until the next.Hope this helped

For covering grey and getting nice highlights yes use henna that is body art quality (pure and natural). Also if you don't want so much reddish tones on your greys you can try the cofee or also use amla powder, or indigo for hair.

Hope this helps

I use the garnier line of home hair color - never had a problem & the color looks VERY natural.

And yes - I've been in your situation & used it for exactly the same thing.
