Each State and city is different. Check the laws in your area. I do know that you have to be state certified and have insurance no matter where you are at.

Actually, in most states, you do not have to be licensed. If you want to be licensed in your state, you will have to take continuing education hours (12/yr in my state). The benefits of being licensed include being able to participate in the food program and accept state funded daycare children. I run a home daycare, and am not licensed. I am certified in CPR and have children of my own. One of my main reasons for not getting licensed is because I got burned many years ago when I put my first child in daycare. She was a licensed provider, I checked all her references, but she was abusive to my child. Sometimes being licensed only means you are legally allowed to take on more children. Also, some of my friends who are licensed daycare providers never even have a state official inspect their home. I keep my group small and welcome parents to drop in anytime without notice. I don't live in a large city, so I charge $120/wk full time or $3.50/hr. part-time, and I provide all meals and snacks. If it's something you're really interested in, do lots of research.

I do state certified in home daycare and in Ohio you only need a high school education. They make you take so many hours of trainings throughout the year though. The rates vary by states and counties so I can't help there.

To be liecensed in the state of IN your have to have a CDA which is just three courses that can be taken at the resource and refferal office. If you are legally excempt you don't have to have any. If different for every state but to be legally excempt here you can have up to 5 not including any children in relation to you.
