xp home is still current
and has support(endless memory eating patches from msoft)
vista is out the end of jan
and allready needs updating
once u install it(more endless memory eating patches from msoft)u will end up with more or less
the same as u have now
but more twinkly lights
and groovy icons
but if u are a must have it
type person u will pay through the nose
for vista right now,and also just like
xp ~vista will have bugs that need
to be ironed out now
if u wait 6months-year
it will run easier on the pc
because the flaws will
have been corrected by then.

First you must be aware that vista doesn't run on every computer which is capable to run xp. The hardware, included the graphic card, needs a minimum standard. I don't think that it will be impossible to run alternatives to microsoft, after all the lawsuits against microsoft. But perhaps alternatives to word 2003 won't run, only alternatives to word 2007.....

Vista is a memory hogger it needs a huge amount, even the most basic version will hog everything you have.
The security is much higher on this version and any software not verified by MS wont work (which is most of mine)
It is obviously much slower also.
I would wait a while and see all the reviews and complaints flooding in before making a decision plus the amount of patches needed will be interesting
