1. Employment opportunities.
2. Some illegals are getting support (i.e. welfare) by using fradulent documents while some Americans can't even get that.
3. Illegals come take away Americans' opportunities (i.e. work, money, housing)

I don't think it's so much a problem of immigration from Mexico, as it is illegal immigration from Mexico (though that's not the only country people immigrate to the US from).

For some, it's an issue of fairness. If people are crossing the border to live and work here illegally, what message does that send to the people who work hard and spend years going through the legal immigration process? Play by the rules and you're a sucker?

Another issue is illegal immigrants' use of public services compared with what they pay in taxes. Since they lack social security numbers, and because many wind up working "off the books", it is almost impossible to tax their wages (which are often low to begin with). Yet, many send their children to public (taxpayer-funded) schools and get emergency treatment at hospitals (if you can't pay, the public winds up footing the bill).

A third issue is the impact of illegal immigrants on the labor market. Some say that they take only jobs Americans don't want or can't do - but others would argue that this is because the wages for those jobs are too low, and that the availability of cheap immigrant labor gives employers no incentive to raise wages.

As for why everything seems to be focused on immigration from Mexico, it's because we share a very long, indefensible border with that nation. It's hard to build support for compassionate, fair reforms to the system when thousands of people are just completely ignoring the laws and coming across it anyway. That shows terrible disrespect for the country that those immigrants want to live and work in.

Edit: Racism is a red herring. There are many legitimate reasons to be concerned with illegal immigration from Mexico. Racism would have little power over people and policy if there were no real basis for concern.

The problem is the misconception from our government. They say they are only taking jobs that Americans won't do. This is absolutely not true. My family has been in the construction trade for many generations. They (illegal immigrants) have taken over the construction trades. The reason Americans can no longer do these jobs is the illegals have driven the wages down to where Americans can't make a living. I no longer work in construction. I do not totally blame the illegals. I blame our government that does not enforce the laws. The law basically states that no employer can higher an undocumented worker. Republicans want cheap labor for their business interest and Democrats want the votes to gain more power.....We will all lose if we do nothing.

I have no misconceptions about immigrations. There are legal ways to immigrate. Priority given to family members of citizens & employment (divided into categories that are useful to the US like science & doctors being 1st)
To become a citizen you must 1- live here (green card required),
2- resident of District of INS, 3- Be able to read, write & speak English, 4- have knowledge of American history & goverment 5- be of good morals 6- Be favorable towards the US & its people & goverment. Wait like immigrants have for years & stop trying to jump in line in front of legal immigrants.
If you are not willing to become a US Citizen & achieve these 5 goals, then what is the point of allowing the immigration. Illegals bring more crime as they have broken the law to get into the US.
Many have no interest in our country or our langauge, just money to send home to help Mexico. Many live in groups in apartments made for 2-3 people & it destroys the apartment. The tax drain for health care & schools is crippling our area. Everytime 1 child is taught English another 1 replaces him. The volunteer programs at the schools are tied up with teaching English & not helping the other school children. The illegal immigrants marched on our state Capitol to demand their rights, they do not have rights as they are illegals. Prisoners who break out of jail do not "demand" their rights. They closed Mexican restuarants & businesses to show support. I miss the Mexican foods but not enough to support the illegal activity.
My husband started working for a company that had 43 illegals that they could identify. He has done his job & in 8 years there is 1 illegal left & they are having trouble with the evidence he is illegal. He admits it but they can not prove it. He has had no trouble replaces illegals & 42 grateful Americans that have American jobs. His employees love his sense of fairness & no he is not prejudice, he has Mexicans, Argentias, Vietmanes & Cambodians & etc.that work for him but they are all in country legally.

Because unlike a lot of European immigrants, The Mexican immigrants are not trying to integrate into the U.S lifestyle. Where as many German, Asian, Italion, and other non-english speaking immigrants learned Engish and changed with their new surroundings, way too many mexican immigrants have done nothing to try and learn English. And the fact that they break the law before they are even in the country by sneaking in illegally. (which by the way you forgot to mention in your question that most dislike ILLEGAL!!! immigrants, no legal immigrants.)

And finally, stealing someone elses identity to get a job is not right. I understand you have a family to feed in Mexico but that does not give you a right to ruin some innocent person's life just to make money. That is very selfish of the immigrants.

The issue isn't immigration, it's 3 things:

[1] Security. If millions of illegals can get past America's southern borders and disappear, with active and organized facilitation from both the Mexican government and its criminal class, then so can al-Qaeda. Or organized agents of countries like Iran. Post-9/11, that's simply unacceptable.

[2] Illegality. This, too, is a self-selection. Unsurprisingly, accepting millions of people whose self-selecting feature is disdain for laws that inconvenience them is not seen as a net positive. Contrast this with immigrants who come through official channels, and thereby demonstrate a respect for those laws that ensures the foundation of a successful and safe society.

The fundamental lack of respect shown by the recent protests, and indeed the entire illegal immigration/ no-borders movement, are sandpaper on that problem. Which brings us to....

[3] Assimilation. We wouldn't be having this debate at nearly the same intensity if America's credo was still patriotic assimilation. But it is not, which creates significant long-term vulnerabilities. As Herbert Meyer explained in Why Americans Hate This 'Immigration' Debate, the problem is "not a growing population of foreigners among us, but rather a growing population of foreigners among us who aren't behaving like immigrants." That's because most of the institutions that once taught people how to "behave like American immigrants" no longer teach or celebrate the things that transmitted and shaped those attitudes.

Illegal Immigration Is Not A Victimless Crime
Apologists for illegal immigration try to paint it as a victimless crime, but the fact is that illegal immigration causes substantial harm to American citizens and legal immigrants, particularly those in the most vulnerable sectors of our population — the poor, minorities, and children.

Illegal immigration causes an enormous drain on public funds. The seminal study of the costs of immigration by the National Academy of Sciences found that the taxes paid by immigrants do not begin to cover the cost of services received by them. The quality of education, health care and other services for Americans are undermined by the needs of endless numbers of poor, unskilled illegal entrants.

Additionally, job competition by waves of illegal immigrants desperate for any job unfairly depresses the wages and working conditions offered to American workers, hitting hardest at minority workers and those without high school degrees.

Illegal Immigration And Population Growth
Illegal immigration also contributes to the dramatic population growth overwhelming communities across America — crowding school classrooms, consuming already limited affordable housing, and increasing the strain on precious natural resources like water, energy, and forestland. The immigration authorities estimate that the population of illegal aliens is increasing by an estimated half million people annually.

Illegal Immigration Undermines National Security
While most illegal immigrants may come only to seek work and a better economic opportunity, their presence outside the law furnishes an opportunity for terrorists to blend into the same shadows while they target the American public for their terrorist crimes. Some people advocate giving illegal aliens legal status to bring them out of the shadows, but, if we accommodate illegal immigration by offering legal status, this will be seen abroad as a message that we condone illegal immigration, and we will forever be stuck with the problem.

Honestly, I really do not understand why all of these people here cry so much about having their "America" taken away from them, when it was never theirs in the first place!! I am so tired of hearing "Americans" claim that Mexicans are taking away their precious USA, when their ancesters did the same with the natives that lived here (including some Mexicanos) REED YOUR HISTORY BOOKS! America belongs to the natives (and the Mexicans who lived here) THEY ARE THE REAL AMERICANS! Yet most people here have forgoten that little detail...Do some wikipedia research! Find out about the REAL history behind today's "America." I'm sorry if I din't answer your question properly, but I am really tired of hearing people complain about "illegals" taking away their country, when it is not true.

It's not IMMIGRATION! it's the fact that so many are ILLEGAL!!!!!

Illegal alien criminals a looked down upon based on THEIR actions.

1) they are breaking the law
2) they DEMAND services and rights they don't deserve
3) they sponge off the US taxpayer
4) to work, they have to steal a person's identity (another crime)
5) they burden the schools because their kids need extra help since they don't speak English and the English speaking kids don't get the attention they rightfully deserve
6) they don't assimilate, don't learn English and then claim racism.

I can continue!

I have no problem with immigration from Mexico if the people are going to leave Mexico behind in Mexico. If they want to come here and have America be Mexico, then it is time for them to turn around and go home. We do not need Mexico here! If they want to live in Mexico, they should STAY in Mexico. This goes for anybody from anywhere else.
